Summer Beauty

Perfect weather for an alfresco lunch

Hello Beauties,

Isn’t this English Summer glorious? The sun, the sun! If Spring were a blooming maiden, Summer in Devon is drop dead gorgeous. Everything is so lovingly green and vivid under the rich blue sky. Driving through tree lined roads in Devon is like racing through green tunnels, it is a mesmerising experience. Life continues to flourish around us: ducklings and chicks bumble about the farm, the Spring calves are growing fast, and we just welcomed the arrival of six golden puppies! We’ll share more pictures of these cuties soon, but we digress…

The Little Beast, never was there a beast so elegantly jaded.

Did you know that most Brits get sunburnt at home rather than abroad? Whilst slathering on sunscreen is a well practised ritual on an exotic beach, back home it is all too easy to run outside in minimal clothing, exposing still fair skin that is somewhat shy of the sun. Both of us accidentally caught the sun recently, despite applying sunscreen in the morning. Lola has been nursing a patchy complexion thanks to post-sun peeling; there might have been a slight murmur from Dominic about his pink cheeks.

We absolutely adore sunny weather - who doesn’t? Moderate, sensible exposure to the sun is very beneficial to health and well being. Sunlight provides our main source of vitamin D, a vital nutrient that is essential for bone health, immune function and mental health. However, excessive sun exposure without protection can cause long term skin damage, resulting in dry, crepey skin, dark spots and premature aging. Skin cancer is the fastest growing cancer in the UK - getting sunburnt just once significantly increases the risk of skin cancer. For beauty and health’s sake, get your SPF on!

A day cream with SPF offers good basic protection for general out and about in town. We feel foundation is too heavy for summer, and prefer tinted moisturisers or BB/CC creams for a dewy complexion - they tend to come with SPF too. We would admit that we are not great fans of the sticky texture of sunscreens, and Lola’s sensitive skin has reacted to most sunscreens on the market. We do however have a couple of favourites that we would like to share with you. Hampton Sun Continuous Mist Sunscreen comes in several strengths, is a doodle to apply on the fly, covers the skin with a light veil and can also be used on the face (spray onto palms first). For the face we prefer Goldfaden MD Sun Visor SPF30, which produces a very fine mist that can be applied over makeup, with the added bonus of covering the eye area.

We hope our little tips help you look as radiant as summer. Don’t forget to apply sunscreen to delicate yet often neglected areas such as ears, back of the neck, top of feet and hands! Also, SPF degrades over time, so remember to reapply throughout the day. :)
